The Cotton Gin Antiques Mall has a long and established history in the community of Wynnewood, Oklahoma. The original building was built on the northwest corner of what was then the intersection of Main and Commercial in the late 1800’s in the former settlement of Walner, Indian Territory.
To the best of our knowledge the original building housed a dry goods store on the lower level and an opera house on the second floor. Unfortunately, fire claimed this building sometime between 1910 and 1920.
The building was later rebuilt as a dry goods store, Federated Stores Franks & Sons, around 1934 by Mr. W.H. Franks. The store was operated at the time by Mr. Ray Franks, the father of General Tommy R. Franks. In 1937 W.H. Franks added the second floor to his dry goods store which housed a seven bed hospital. He later expanded it into a 14 bed facility that also included a dental office. General Tommy Franks was born in this very facility. The hospital operated until December, 1950, when the new hospital/clinic was completed a block to the east.
Over the years the upstairs has remained vacant but still shows signs as its former life as a hospital. The down stairs has housed at least three different dry goods stores, OTASCO, and now the present-day Cotton Gin.
